HyperEVM Explained: Moving Assets To and From HyperCore
Mechanics verified against Hyperliquid's official docs on 2026-09-15. This page covers the parts a trader meets; it does not review any HyperEVM application.
Most confusion about the HyperEVM comes from one sentence in the docs: "the HyperEVM is not a separate chain". Your perps, spot balances and order books live on HyperCore; the EVM is a second execution environment on the same chain, "secured by the same HyperBFT consensus". Funds move between the two without a bridge, but with gas, and with a few rules that lose money when ignored.
One chain, two parts
"Hyperliquid is one state with HyperCore state (e.g., perps, spot, order books, other trading features) and HyperEVM state." Applications on the EVM "can directly access the liquidity on the order books" through read precompiles and, in the docs' lending example, send orders "directly swapping XYZ and ABC" on the native book. A token can exist as an ERC-20 on the EVM and as a HyperCore spot asset at once, once the two are linked. The docs describe the EVM as "in the alpha stage", launched deliberately "with lower initial throughput" and without the usual pre-arranged tooling, on the "no insiders" principle; "higher throughput and write system contracts are not live on mainnet yet". Technically it runs "the Cancun hardfork without blobs" with EIP-1559, a "dual block system: fast small blocks and slow big blocks", and burns priority fees as well as base fees.
Add it to your wallet
Via Chainlist or "Add Custom Network": Chain ID 999, network name Hyperliquid, RPC
https://rpc.hyperliquid.xyz/evm, currency symbol HYPE. Testnet is chain ID 998 at
rpc.hyperliquid-testnet.xyz/evm. "There are currently no official frontend components
of the EVM"; you interact through the JSON-RPC and third-party apps. The single official RPC has
no websocket support; others may. If a wallet cannot add custom networks, the docs point to Rabby,
"which supports the HyperEVM as an integrated network".
Moving assets between HyperCore and the EVM
On the app, use "Transfer to/from EVM" on the Balances table or "EVM Core Transfer" at the top of
the Portfolio page. Under the hood, HYPE moves by sending it to
0x2222222222222222222222222222222222222222 "from either your Spot balances or from
the EVM" — and the docs warn that "this only works for HYPE; sending other assets will lead to
them being lost. Each spot asset has a unique transfer address". Gas is HYPE in both directions:
"sending from the HyperEVM to your Spot balances costs gas in HYPE on the HyperEVM. Sending from
your Spot balances to the HyperEVM cost gas in HYPE on HyperCore (Spot)". Error code 10055 marks
failures "at the boundary between HyperCore and HyperEVM" such as nonce errors or insufficient
funds.
Getting there from another chain
"Many CEXs and bridges support withdrawals on Hyperliquid, either via HyperCore or HyperEVM." The onboarding page lists bridges and swaps including Stargate, deBridge, Gas.zip, Jumper, Cortex (HYPE), Garden (BTC), Mintify (ETH), USDT0 and Stargate for USDe. Before sending HYPE from the EVM to an exchange: "first confirm with the CEX that they support the HyperEVM", because "some CEXs support sending and receiving HYPE from Spot balances on HyperCore, but not the HyperEVM". The docs' standing advice: "always remember to do a test transaction".
Three things that go wrong
- "I clicked Transfer to/from EVM and my funds vanished." "Your funds are not lost. They went from HyperCore to the HyperEVM." Move them back with the same feature; you need HYPE on the EVM for gas, and if you moved something other than HYPE, "buy HYPE on Spot and use the same 'Transfer to/from EVM' feature to move HYPE to the EVM for gas".
- "My wallet doesn't show my EVM assets." Add the network (chain ID 999), then add the token: the wallet icon next to the contract in a spot asset's info bar on the Trade page, or the contract address from a HyperEVM explorer.
- "Insufficient ETH for gas." "You don't need ETH for gas on the HyperEVM. You need HYPE." The message usually means the network was not added properly. A MetaMask-specific error about transaction envelope type 0x2 is "a known issue with MetaMask"; the docs suggest Rabby. Gas spikes happen because throughput "was intentionally launched" low and "will be increased over time".
FAQ
Is HYPE on the HyperEVM the same as HYPE on HyperCore?
Same asset, two locations. It has 18 decimals on the EVM, moves via the 0x2222… address, and only earns staking rewards once transferred to HyperCore and into the staking account — see the staking page.
Can I trade perps on the HyperEVM?
Perps live on HyperCore. EVM applications can reach the order books through precompiles, but your perp account is a HyperCore account.
Which wallet works best?
The docs name Rabby three times as the fallback for custom-network and gas-format problems; this site has not field-tested wallets and does not rank them.
