How HYPE Staking Works: Lockups, Yield, Discounts
Mechanics verified against Hyperliquid's official docs on 2026-09-15. This page is about how staking works; what HYPE is and is not sits on the HYPE token page.
Staking HYPE does two unrelated things: it delegates stake to a validator for a protocol reward, and it unlocks a trading-fee discount. Both run through a separate "staking account" with its own timings. The timings are where people get caught, so they come first.
Three balances, two clocks
"Just as USDC can be transferred between perps and spot accounts, HYPE can be transferred between spot and staking accounts." Spot to staking is instant. Inside the staking account you delegate to validators, and "delegations to a particular validator have a lockup duration of 1 day", after which you can undelegate partially or fully; undelegated HYPE "instantly reflect[s] in staking account balance". Getting it back to spot is the slow leg: "transfers from staking account to spot account have a 7 day unstaking queue", with "at most 5 pending withdrawals" per address. The docs' example: a transfer started at 08:00:00 UTC on 11 March "will be finalized at 08:00:01 UTC on March 18". The support FAQ stresses that unstaking and transferring to spot "are two separate actions" — the seven days start when you initiate the transfer, not when you undelegate — and that it "is not possible to speed up".
What staking pays
"The staking reward rate formula is inspired by Ethereum, where the reward rate is inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked. At 400M total HYPE staked, the reward rate is approximately 2.37% per year." Rewards "come from the future emissions reserve", are "accrued every minute and distributed to stakers every day", and are "redelegated automatically to the staked validator, i.e., compounded". They are "based on the minimum balance that a delegator has staked during each staking epoch" of 100k consensus rounds, "approximately 90 minutes on mainnet". Validators "may charge a commission", which "cannot be increased unless the new commission is less than or equal to 1%". A validator that is voted "jailed" for poor responsiveness "does not produce rewards for its delegators"; jailing "is not the same as slashing", and "there is currently no automatic slashing implemented".
Choosing a validator
Each validator "has a self-delegation requirement of 10k HYPE to become active", locked for one year; if self-delegation drops below that, the validator "enters undelegate-only mode". Because consensus needs an honest quorum of more than two-thirds of stake, the docs call it "an essential responsibility of every staker to only delegate to trusted validators". The Hyper Foundation runs a delegation programme that favours validators with strong testnet or mainnet performance and requires two public non-validator nodes at 95% uptime and KYC/KYB; participation in it is something the Foundation's validators "will strongly consider" when trusting peers. Staking is done on the app and on several community front-ends the onboarding page lists.
The fee-discount tiers
| Tier | HYPE staked | Trading fee discount |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | >10 | 5% |
| Bronze | >100 | 10% |
| Silver | >1,000 | 15% |
| Gold | >10,000 | 20% |
| Platinum | >100,000 | 30% |
| Diamond | >500,000 | 40% |
The discount applies to maker and taker fees on perps and spot; the fees page carries the full discounted grid. It stacks with the 4% referral discount and with volume tiers.
Linking a staking account to a trading account
If you stake from one address and trade from another, the docs let you link them "so that the staking user's HYPE staked can be attributed to the trading user's fees". The rules are strict: "linking is permanent. Unlinking is not supported"; "the staking user will not receive any staking-related fee discount after being linked"; the link is set up by the trading account first and finalised by the staking account; and both "must be controlled by the same user", because "the staking user will be able to unilaterally transfer all funds from the trading user". "No action is required if you plan to trade and stake from the same address."
FAQ
I unstaked a week ago and nothing arrived. Why?
Check that you started the transfer from staking balance to spot balance. Undelegating alone returns HYPE to the staking balance instantly; the seven-day queue only begins with the transfer.
Can I lose staked HYPE?
The docs say no automatic slashing is implemented today; slashing is "reserved for provably malicious behavior such as double-signing". Jailing stops rewards but does not take stake.
Does HYPE on HyperEVM earn staking rewards?
Not until it is moved to HyperCore spot and then to the staking account; the how-to-stake page starts with that transfer. See the HyperEVM page.
