How to Start Trading on Lighter (2026): Step by Step

How-to · 4 min read · Updated 2026-07-22

Mechanics verified against official Lighter docs on 2026-07-22.

Perpetual futures are leveraged instruments — your entire margin can be lost quickly, and funding accrues while a position is open. Read the risk disclosure before you fund an account. Lighter is a decentralized perp exchange built on custom ZK circuits with Ethereum as its anchoring and settlement layer, and its onboarding has a quirk worth knowing up front: the deposit IS the signup — depositing assets is what creates your account. You'll need:

From our own setup runs

Setting up the accounts behind this site's field runs, the thing that actually cost us time wasn't any exchange — it was gas. Two lessons we'd hand any occasional crypto user before their first deposit:

  • Always hold the network's own coin, not just your stablecoins. Moving anything on a network costs its native gas coin — USDC on Arbitrum can't go anywhere without a little ETH on Arbitrum. A funded wallet with no gas coin is stranded: you can see your money and you can't move it. Whenever you fund a wallet, send a small amount of the gas coin (a few dollars' worth) to the same network in the same session, and top it up before it runs dry.
  • Check the network against your wallet before you send. The same coin exists on many networks, and the network you pick on a withdrawal screen must be one your wallet actually supports and displays. Verify the wallet lists that network — and do a small test transfer first — before moving the real amount.

Choosing a wallet in the first place is covered by our sister site's crypto wallet rankings.

Deposit — which creates your account

Per the official docs, "to create a Lighter account, you can simply deposit some assets" — the deposit generates your account on the exchange, tied to your Ethereum address by a signed message. On timing, honesty over precision: Lighter's current docs publish no deposit-time figures (re-checked 2026-07-30), so treat any specific claim — including the "15–20 minutes" this page previously quoted for CCTP routes — as unofficial. Expect mainnet deposits within minutes and cross-chain CCTP transfers to take noticeably longer; a CCTP deposit that hasn't credited instantly is normal, not stuck. There's no KYC step anywhere in the documented flow, and no email or password — your wallet signature is the identity.

The USDC routes above aren't the only way in anymore. The live app currently announces — we verified the banner in-app on 2026-07-23 and again on 2026-08-03 — that "Deposits from Card, Bitcoin, Coinbase, Tron, Solana, USDT and more, are now available." That's an app-surface fact, not a documented one: Lighter's docs contain no deposit or on-ramp page at all (re-checked 2026-08-03), so fees, limits, and processing times for these routes are whatever the deposit flow shows you at the time — as is whether a given route converts into USDC on arrival, which the docs don't address either. Don't confuse these deposit on-ramps with posting non-USDC margin — that's the separate, documented Multi-Asset Margin feature covered above.

Know which account tier you're on

New accounts are Standard by default: 0% maker, 0% taker — genuinely zero trading fees — with the trade-off paid in speed, not money: orders execute with a few hundred milliseconds of added latency, and API usage is rate-limited. The opt-in Premium tier flips that trade: paid fees (0.0040%/0.0280%, discounted down a published grid by staking LIT) in exchange for high-frequency-grade latency and limits. For a newcomer trading by hand, Standard's latency is irrelevant and the zero fee is real — the full picture is on our Lighter fees page. Tier switching is allowed once every 24 hours, with no open orders or positions.

First trade

Pick a market and order type — Lighter's documented set runs from market and limit orders (with post-only and reduce-only variants) through stop-loss/take-profit, TWAP, and more advanced forms. Both cross and isolated margin are supported. Leverage caps are per-market: up to 50x on BTC and ETH, scaling down to as low as 3x on the riskiest long-tail listings — treat the cap as a hazard sign, not a target, and start at low leverage while the mechanics are new. Funding on each market runs on a 1-hour period per the contract specifications. If the screen itself needs decoding — Standard vs Premium, the order panel, Public Pools — our interface walkthrough explains every button with screenshots from our own account.

Worth knowing while you trade: Lighter's points program is in Season 2 (weekly Friday distributions, adjustable at the team's discretion) — our Lighter points page covers it, and our earning guide covers why points should never be the reason you overtrade.

Withdraw

Two documented paths: standard ("secure") withdrawals with a 1 USDC minimum, and fast withdrawals (USDC only, 4 USDC minimum). One honesty note: the docs we verified don't quantify standard withdrawal timing, so we won't guess — plan a test withdrawal early, before it matters. Smart-contract wallet users have the documented restriction that secure withdrawal is their only path out.

FAQ

Do I need to complete KYC to trade on Lighter?

No KYC process is documented anywhere in the onboarding flow — account creation is a deposit plus a wallet signature. Geo-restrictions are enforced at the terms level; the excluded list includes the US, Canada, the UK, and China.

Is trading really free?

On Standard accounts, maker and taker fees are both 0% per the official account-types docs. The costs that remain are the universal ones — spread, and funding while a position is open — plus the latency/rate-limit trade-off that distinguishes Standard from Premium. See the fees breakdown.

Can I deposit ETH or other tokens to trade perps?

No — "only USDC can be deposited to your perps account," per the official docs. Bring USDC on mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, or Avalanche.
