Hyperliquid vs GRVT (2026): On-Chain Book vs Hybrid CLOB

Facts verified against each venue's official docs on 2026-09-21. Any comparison of volume or liquidity reflects a point-in-time reading that moves constantly — treat it as a reading, not a fixed ranking.

These two answer the same question — where do my orders match, and who holds my money — in opposite ways. Hyperliquid runs its order book on its own Layer 1, so every order, cancel and fill is public and your counterparty is another trader, with no account to open and no identity to verify. GRVT matches trades off-chain on a book that its User Agreement says is owned and operated by a Panama company, settles them on a ZKsync-stack validium where order data stays private, and makes you verify your identity before an account is registered. Both keep custody with your key. Almost every difference below flows from that split.

Note on jurisdiction: both venues block US persons. Hyperliquid blocks US users; GRVT's Restricted Jurisdictions page bans the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada and fourteen more. Check each venue's own terms for the authoritative, current list before signing up.

Verdict

Public book without KYC, or a CEX-style book with self-custody and a far wider shelf. Hyperliquid gives you a verifiable on-chain order book, partial liquidation and no identity check. GRVT gives you 194 USDT perps that reach single stocks, ETFs, gold, oil and pre-IPO names, pays makers from the first tier, and asks for KYC, an off-chain book and all-or-nothing liquidation in return. Pick GRVT for the TradFi shelf and the rebate; pick Hyperliquid for transparency, no KYC and gentler liquidation.

Where the book lives

On Hyperliquid, matching and settlement happen on the same chain; anyone can inspect the book and the fills. See our full Hyperliquid review for how that works.

GRVT's own description is "efficient off-chain trade matching with on-chain settlement and margin management". The User Agreement names Albatross Group Overseas S.A. as the entity that "operates and owns the centralised aspects of this Platform, including the Central Limit Order Book", and the litepaper says "individual order and position data is not broadcast to the public chain" — the validium keeps it private while "validity proofs settle on Ethereum L1". Custody is the part both share: on GRVT "your funds sit in smart contracts on-chain that open only when your key signs", and the platform can pause trading but cannot move funds. What you give up is the ability to audit the book yourself, and anonymity: the Terms require identity verification and the AML page describes sanctions screening and monitoring. The GRVT review covers the operator, the audits and the yield layer that deploys exchange reserves to Aave.

Fees

Hyperliquid runs a standard per-fill schedule: 0.045% taker / 0.015% maker, reduced by volume tiers, HYPE staking and a 4% referral discount, with hourly peer-to-peer funding — see our full breakdown.

GRVT's Level 1 is 0.045% taker and −0.0001% maker, so the taker rate matches Hyperliquid's base and the maker side is a small rebate from the first dollar of volume. Nine volume tiers run down to 0.024% taker and −0.003% maker at $1 billion of 30-day volume, and locking GRVT tokens in the Membership Program jumps an account up to Level 4. Funding settles every 4 or 8 hours on most markets rather than hourly, and Multi-Asset Margin adds hourly interest on auto-borrowed USDT plus a 0.1% to 0.25% repayment fee when USDC is converted to clear it. The GRVT fees page has every table.

Which to pick

If you want stock, ETF, commodity or pre-IPO perps in one USDT account, are paid to make from day one, and accept KYC and an off-chain book, GRVT is built for that — with the caveat that a breach closes the whole position. If you want a verifiable on-chain book, no identity check, partial liquidation and a token with staking utility, Hyperliquid fits better — read our full Hyperliquid review. Either way, weigh both against the rest of the field in our perp DEX rankings before committing capital.

FAQ

Is GRVT decentralised?

Custody and settlement are on-chain; matching is not. GRVT calls this a hybrid, and its Terms name a company that owns the order book. Your key is still the only thing that can move your funds, which is the property the two venues share.

Which has more markets?

GRVT's public list returned 194 perps on 2026-09-21, with a large traditional-asset section. Hyperliquid's list is crypto-led; this site's market directory tracks what it lists day to day, and the stock perps index shows which venues list each equity.

Does either venue need KYC?

Hyperliquid does not. GRVT does: Clause 4.3 of its User Agreement makes identity verification a condition of registering an account.

Perpetual futures carry substantial risk regardless of venue — see our risk disclosure before trading either exchange.
